Ioqa has created Unburnt Circular Tiles, a sustainable construction material.
Ioqa looked into the nature of construction and production, and the staggering amount of waste produced at these sites that are destined for landfills. Their goal was to produce innovative designs, from decorative products to construction materials, lessening the impact on the environment at the same time.
The tiles are manufactured by chemical bonding rather than traditional firing, producing significantly less carbon dioxide in the process. They are made from industrial waste derived from ceramics, glass and fly ash but have similar properties to normal tiles as they can be applied as facades, interior/exterior walls and furniture.
The studio considers Unburnt Circular Tiles reflects an obsession with unique textures and colours to create an innovative and ever-developing production process.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design (building product) category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
