Friedrich Gerlach and Julia Huhnholz have collaborated to create the Essence of Biocement.

In the production of Biocement, bacteria are used to bind recycled bricks with calcium carbonate – the process of which requires neither firing nor emitting CO2.

Within the project, the procedure was meticulously examined and restructured for enhanced accessibility and understanding.

Using biofabrication and 3D printing, innovative forms of the material are created. In the project, the key functional and aesthetic potentials of Biocement were investigated and used to design a piece of seating furniture.

The chair, consisting of three individually manufactured profiles, was created to make research more accessible through design.

This project has been longlisted in the material innovation category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
