RAPA have built Summer House in Tihany, Hungary.
Using traditional craftsmanship and locally available materials, the design of Summer House emphasises contextuality and tradition.
The three-storey design incorporates elements from reed-roofed rural longhouses, 1960s flat-roofed stone houses and small box-like summer cabins.
Reed which grows abundantly at Tihany's lakeside is used not only as roofing but to cover the whole top floor, even the bottom of the cantilever. Volcanic stone mined in the region is used in the wine cellars.
Reducing the transport required for construction materials means that the building benefits from a low carbon footprint.
This project has been shortlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
