Freitag Store Shanghai

Kooo Architects has redesigned the interiors of an old factory into the new Freitag store in Shanghai, China.

This project, once a towel factory from the 1970s, has been transformed to interweave the Freitag brand narrative with the site environment and practice the core of resource conservation.

"The store design reflects Freitag's emphasis on using waste materials [where] bricks were recast from on-site demolition materials and construction enclosure panels were used to form the building's facade," told Kooo Architects.

Through a variety of carbon-saving strategies, including retaining the original building as much as possible, the project's carbon emissions were reduced by approximately 45 percent.

Additionally, as part of the complex concept of the project, communal roof terraces are placed between shops and neighbours, whose native plants enrich the biodiversity and enliven the community as a whole.

"Freitag's projects follow its long-term vision and this store is no exception," added Kooo Architects.

This project has been shortlisted in the retail interior category of Dezeen Awards China 2023.
