Abraham Thomas
Abraham Thomas is the Daniel Brodsky Curator of modern architecture, design and decorative arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Daniel Brodsky title at the museum is a recognition of Daniel Brodsky, the museum's chairman, and his wife Estrellita B. Brodsky's gift to endow two important curatorships in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Thomas has held positions as the curator of designs and lead curator for architecture at the V&A and was subsequently appointed the director of Sir John Soane’s Museum in 2013. He also worked as the curator-in-charge of the Renwick Gallery and senior curator at the Arts and Industries Building at the Smithsonian Institution and served on the jury of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize.
The curator has published and lectured extensively on architecture and design and his research interests include the broader intersections with graphic design, photography, fashion and film.
Recent exhibitions curated at the Met include the 2023 Roof Garden Commission by Lauren Halsey, Perfect Imperfection in Ceramic Art and Community: The Architecture of Civic Space and Private Domains. He is curating the Met’s forthcoming exhibition on the architect Paul Rudolph, opening in September 2024.
Previous exhibition projects include Heatherwick Studio: Designing the Extraordinary and Superstructures and The New Architecture 1960-1990 for the Sainsbury Centre.
