Tibetan Thangka Art Museum

And Studio has conceptualised and developed the Tibetan Thangka Art Museum in Lhasa, Tibet.

The Tibetan Thangka Art Museum is located at the foot of the mountain, emphasising the dialogue between the mountain and the sky.

"Two years ago, the owner of the world's largest Thangka art collection approached us to design a Thangka museum," told And Studio.

The block layout draws on the topological image of Tibetan Buddhist temples where the indoor tour route follows the spatial organisation of a modern museum and the outdoor tour route follows the logic of a Tibetan temple.

"An understanding of Buddhist culture was translated into practical spatial design to create a modern museum deeply rooted in local culture," added And Studio. "While inheriting artistic treasures, this project also hopes to become an open, modern and vibrant cultural gathering place."

This project has been shortlisted in the cultural project category of Dezeen Awards China 2023.
