Dezeen Showroom: modularity and adaptability meet in the Unit storage system, designed by French furniture brand Tiptoe with a playful emphasis on self-assembly.

Tiptoe's first storage system design, Unit is made from a simple black or off-white steel frame with shelves, drawers and doors made of oak wood.

The Unit storage system is modular and comes in a range of heights

The system is designed to adapt to any space, with a range of five different heights and several storage elements – there is even the option of a desk-style work shelf for people who want a discreet home office.

This allows the same system to be used to create furniture as diverse as a low TV console table, a chest of drawers, a tailored shelving unit or a workstation – and for the same components to be reused, repaired and adapted as a home evolves.

Adding a fun aesthetic touch is Unit's pin-based assembly system, which appears on both sides of the frame and serves as a connector on one side and a hook or decorative detail on the other.

This celebration of assembly and function is a running theme in the work of Tiptoe, a ten-year-old company that manufactures entirely within Europe.
