Lie Bormans, DMOA Architects and KU Leuven have collaborated to create Robotic Serendipity, a series of robotically manipulated cardboard panels.

Robotic Serendipity empowers architects to determine the appearance of concrete surfaces and apply crafted textures custom to their projects.

In this project, cardboard panels were robotically manipulated to create a specific texture and placed into the concrete formwork to imprint the concrete surface.

The use of robotics enables the processing of large surfaces, while the material (in this case cardboard) adds an unpredictable dimension as it reacts uniquely to each robotic operation.

Through creativity and innovation, these robotic operations and material behaviours are transformed into intriguing, poëtic textures with a strong artisanal appearance on the scale of an entire facade.

This project has been longlisted in the surface design category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
