Konsum Karwe
by Meyer-Grohbrügge Planer and Studio Other Spaces

Meyer-Grohbrügge has refurbished and designed Konsum's Karwe store in Berlin, Germany.

Once a location for the former GDR cooperative supermarket chain Konsum, the building in Karwe – a small village located at Lake Neuruppin in Brandenburg – was an abandoned ruin for 25 years before it was refurbished.

The body of the existing structure remains intact, complemented by a new roof and a transparent envelope of wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows.

The surrounding layer offers additional space with no set function, allowing the house to shrink and grow according to the number of family members and guests using it, the time of day and the seasons.

This project has been longlisted in the house (rural) category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
