Domain Architects has redesigned and renovated the MM Farm Hotel in Beijing, China.
This project transformed an abandoned school in a mountain village in Beijing into a new boutique hotel.
Domain Architects recreated a waterfront settlement atmosphere to echo a nearby reservoir with a system of public paths elevated from an extensive reflection pool.
"Although the structure of this rent[ed] property was not allowed to be changed, we used 60,000 metres of hemp rope to change the facades while barely touching the existing houses," said Domain Architects.
Through the mesh of ropes, the original structure is revealed to a changing degree as viewers move, creating a breathtaking light effect and leaving zero carbon footprint.
This project has been longlisted in the hospitality project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
