Oshinowo Studio has designed The Marketplace in Ngarannam, Nigeria.
The marketplace in the Ngarannam resettlement town was designed as a place of convergence rooted in Kanuri and Islamic culture.
"Our practice prioritises human-centred design; here, we ensured our intervention aligned with cultural, environmental and climatic realities," said Oshinowo Studio.
"We created an adaptable shading pavilion to encourage social gatherings between closed shops, referencing the tessellation patterns synonymous with the Bambam cap worn as a traditional male headdress and sewn by the Kanuri women of this and other communities."
As a result, The Marketplace design fosters community interaction and commerce while respecting and revitalising traditional practices.
This project has been longlisted in the small project category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
