LDA Design has transformed and designed the Strand-Aldwych space in London, United Kingdom.

Strand-Aldwych reimagines an outdated, polluted Westminster gyratory to create a traffic-free public space everyone can enjoy, a place for people and for nature.

"It's a bold act of reclamation of national and international significance and follows Healthy Streets principles," said LDA Design.

Aldwych is now two-way, safer and better for walking and bus accessibility.

Strand, south of Aldwych, was previously a four-lane bottleneck and is now a unique civic landscape with new trees, lawns, communal dining, biodiverse planting, rain gardens and striking hand-crafted sculptural seating.

The transformation has freed the architectural gem St Mary-le-Strand Church and created an extraordinary space for the neighbouring world-famous institutions to share.

This project has been longlisted in the landscape and urban design category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
