Jo Nagasaka / Schemata Architects has developed the Aesop Kichijoji interiors in Tokyo, Japan.

With the reduction of CO2 emissions as one of the design benchmarks, the idea was born to build a store using as few fossil fuels as possible, sourcing environmentally friendly materials from as close to the site as possible.

Thus, the long-awaited street-level store of skincare brand Aesop in Kichijoji is composed of a space made from scrap wood, which came from the demolition site of a house within walking distance of the store's location.

The design was created by giving order to the old wood, which looks disorderly with its various lengths, thicknesses and colours.

This project has been longlisted in the retail interior (small) category of Dezeen Awards 2024.
