Biloba sideboard by Greenapple
Dezeen Showroom: the architecture of a Portuguese monastery inspired the Biloba sideboard, made from marble, brass and eucalyptus wood by furniture brand Greenapple.
Greenapple co-founder and creative director Rute Martins looked to the monumental Alcobaça Monastery to create the Biloba sideboard, and set herself the challenge of reinterpreting the building's structures and shapes in a piece of statement furniture.
The piece also had to be as individual as the building, which features a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Manuelinism, Mannerism and Baroque styles.
Doors made of three different types of marble define the piece, and recall both the arches of the monastery as well as resemble the shape of ginkgo biloba leaves.
The Biloba sideboard is handcrafted in Portugal by artisans using local centuries-old techniques.
It is customisable in size and finishes, and Greenapple hopes the piece will become a family heirloom that can be passed down through the generations.
