Winner: Hotel and short stay interior of the year. Grzywinski + Pons has designed the interiors of Locke at East Side Gallery in Berlin, Germany.

Locke at East Side Gallery is a 176-room hotel with a cafe, bar, lounge, co-working space and event space that Grzywinski+Pons designed in the heart of the eponymous memorial in Berlin's Friedrichshain neighbourhood.

"In our aspiration to create a convivial venue within the storied context, [we] conceived the hotel as a liminal space — a place for exchange, a crossroads for ideas and experiences alike," said Grzywinski+Pons

"We designed the project as a series of site-specific thresholds, interrogating the tension between public and private, residents and guests, art and commerce, the city and the river, Friedrichschain and Kreuzberg."

Judges comments:“The relationship between the existing building and the new interior is very interesting. There are tensions between the public and private spaces, and a palette that speaks to a younger audience. The honesty of the exposed structure contrasts with the new colours, resulting in an expression that is is peaceful but also appropriate for the culture in this part of Berlin.”
