Movie: Ai Weiwei on the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion
Movie: Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was unable to attend last week's opening of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion that he designed in collaboration with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron so he made this movie about the project instead.
In the film, Weiwei talks about the nature of their collaborations and how they decided to represent the imagined traces of past structures on the site with cork-lined trenches. Read more about the design in our earlier story.
Weiwei still can't leave China following his arrest and detention by the Chinese authorities last year. His partnerships with Herzog & de Meuron go back ten years and include the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing .
Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were in London for the opening and Herzog gave us an exclusive impromptu tour of the pavilion, which you can watch here or below.
The pavilion is open to the public in Kensington Gardens until 14 October.
