Milan update: somewhat belatedly, here are works by the ten young British designers selected for the Top Ten show held at the British Council offices in Milan last month.

Top: Snap and Dine by Demelza Hill, University of Brighton. Above and below: Pewter Stool by Max Lamb, Royal College of Art

Below: Hamster Shredder by Thomas Ballhatchet, Central St. Martins College of Art and Design. A cage in which the hamster, while using it’s wheel, operates a paper shredder to renew bedding.

The show celebrates ten years of graduate design shows at the Via Manzoni premises.

In April 2007 the British Council celebrates 10 years of graduating designers’ exhibitions at the Milan Furniture Fair.

In honour of this anniversary three designers who exhibited in the first, Buckinghamshire College show in 1997 selected this year’s top ten furniture and product design students graduating from Britain’s colleges.

Pamela West and Matt Edmonds (now working together as Frank) and Anthony Dickens joined Tom Dixon and the British Council’s Head of Design Emily Campbell to form the jury for the 2007 exhibition Top Ten/Dieci e Lode.

Tom Dixon, who launched his own installation chock a bloc alongside Bucks at the British Council in Milan in 1997, has been a loyal supporter of the British Council’s national graduating students’ competition since its inauguration in 2001.

The three 1997 designers, and Neil Austin (Director of Contemporary Furniture and Related Product Design at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College), exhibit alongside this year’s 10 graduates at the British Council, Via Manzoni 38.
