Stockholm design studio Claesson Koivisto Rune has created a set of three huge cone-shaped lamps for Swedish lighting brand Wästberg.

Claesson Koivisto Rune's oversized W151 pendant shades for Wästberg are spun from aluminium into pieces well over a metre in width or height.

Wästberg claims that as lightbulbs have become smaller, shades have also become smaller as a consequence.

"Today, thanks to LED, the almost zero-sized light source does no longer limit the size and shape of the light fixture," said a statement from the brand. "Consequently, minimising has become the design rule."

The pendants by Claesson Koivisto Rune are designed to counter this trend, creating centrepieces within interior spaces.

"The light fixture has always had an additional role apart from providing light – it shapes the room," said Wästberg, which also has designs by David Chipperfield and Nendo in its range. "The lamp that hangs from the ceiling, often above a table, creates a room within the room."

The conical designs come in three sizes and shapes: a 1.2 metre tall narrow version, a 1.3 metre wide flat version and a third halfway between the two.

Each was created to push the limits of spun aluminium yet still fit through a conventional door frame. Suspended from ceiling fixtures, the lamps can be hung individually or together as a set at various heights.

The W151 collection will be available in a range of powder-coated colour finishes following the products' launch at next year's Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair, taking place from 3 to 7 February 2015 at the Stockholmsmässan exhibition centre.

Claesson Koivisto Rune and Wästberg's previous collaborations include the small colourful W131 pendant lamps made from recycled aluminium, and the W101 task light made entirely of paper.
