Moooi's 2016 furniture and lighting range includes an upended sofa
Milan 2016: a sofa turned vertically on its end and lamps shaped like origami birds are among products in the latest collection from Dutch furniture brand Moooi (+ slideshow).
Moooi is showcasing its 2016 collection as part of the brand's Unexpected Welcome installation during this year's Milan design week.
It includes Moooi co-founder Marcel Wanders' Charleston Chair, a seat formed from a quilted leather Chesterfield sofa turned on its end so it points almost vertically upwards.
A metal swivel stand holds the sofa upright, allowing the user sits on the inner edge of the lower arm and use the seat cushions as a back rest.
Wanders has also designed the Jackson Chair, which has a square back covered with black embroidered canvas. His slender T lamp has a pivoting mechanism influenced by the balancing sculptures of Alexander Calder.
The Perch Light family by London-based Umut Yamac includes six lamps, which feature illuminated birds that looked like they have been folded from paper. The avian figures sit on brass stands, which form table, floor, wall and pendant lights.
The seat of British designer Paul Cocksedge's Compression Sofa appears to indent the chunky cuboid form like a weight squashing a piece of foam. It is available with a marble body and an upholstered fabric seat, or the opposite combination.
Cocksedge's Direttore Shelves have stands modelled on colourful angled books that appear to be unsupported and are reminiscent of elements in Ettore Sottsass' iconic Carlton bookcase.
Ombre gradients pattern the fringe surrounding the collection of Amami seats by Lorenza Bozzoli, which includes a sofa and a series of different-sized poufs and stools.
Other designers that have contributed to the range include Jaime Hayón, who has created a totem-like stack of side tables called Elements, while Bertjan Pot has produced a latticed ovoid lamp named NR2.
Moooi's Unexpected Welcome exhibition is located at Via Savona 56 in Milan, and is running for the duration of the city's design week. Check out Dezeen's guide to this year's unmissable installations and exhibitions »
Moooi's CEO Casper Vissers stepped down from the company last year, 14 years after he co-founded it with Wanders. The position was filled by Robin Bevers, who told Dezeen that running a successful design company is about "embracing chaos".
