Zuza Mengham interprets perfume in resin for Sculpting Scent exhibition

London Design Festival 2016: London artist Zuza Mengham has created an exhibition of crystal-shaped resin sculptures as a physical interpretation of Laboratory Perfumes' range of scents (+ slideshow).

Mengham based each brightly coloured sculpture in the exhibition, titled Sculpting Scent, around the brand's gender-neutral fragrances.

This includes scents like Atlas, containing notes of pipe tobacco alongside rum, vanilla and hay.

Mengham interpreted the different compositions of the fragrances as contrasting colours, angles and visual effects using resin.

She shows citrus scents as clear yellow, and layers translucent resin over speckled, slate-coloured sections to reflect combinations of notes.

The artist has also created pieces with internal patterns that resemble smoke, bubbles, and ink dropped into water. Transparent and opaque sections are placed alongside one another to create light and colour effects.

"They are the perfect encapsulation of scent," said Laboratory Perfumes founder Aaron Firth. "Zuza has captured the resonance and register of fragrance. She understands they are not simplistic or binary".

Mengham avoided reading any descriptions of the scents while creating her sculptures, instead basing notes and ideas just on her initial experience of the smell.

"After I matched them up with their descriptions, I made a series of drawings with watercolour overlays, building up the colours and patterns until I was happy they translated in a way that felt appropriate," she said.

Based in London, Mengham has made several large-scale sculptures and installations, as well as collections of jewellery. The artist has also created resin sculptures for musician FKA Twigs, which were included in live performances.

Resin has seen a surge in popularity among designers, with its versatility as a material applied to everything from pastel-coloured furniture to the preservation and display of dried flowers.

The exhibition is being hosted at The Conran Shop in Marylebone during London Design Festival, which takes place 17 to 25 September 2016.
