Bjarke Ingels
This was the year that young Danish architect Bjarke Ingels became a critically acclaimed international superstar. Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people and published a citation by his former boss Rem Koolhaas, who described Ingels as "the embodiment of a fully fledged new typology, which responds perfectly to the current zeitgeist."
Ingels received high praise from architecture critic Aaron Betsky, who declared in a Dezeen column that "Nobody plays with form as well as Bjarke Ingels".
His office Bjarke Ingels Group built ferociously and seemed to win every prestige job going, from the petite Serpentine Gallery Pavilion to the enormous Two World Trade Center tower in New York and the new Google campus in California, which he is designing in collaboration with designer Thomas Heatherwick.
Aged just 42, he already has a major New York tower under his belt in the unusual form of the tetrahedric Via 57 West apartment building, which completed this year.
Up until the death of Zaha Hadid he was actually set to top our 2016 Hot List, but that tragic event caused a surge in interest in the late female architect. Ingels is our hot tip to top the list next year.
