Herzog & de Meuron

Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron are perennial favourites among Dezeen readers, completing the trio of most admired practices alongside Zaha Hadid Architects and Bjarke Ingels Group.

Their formally diverse output showed no signs of letting up this year, with their Jenga-like 56 Leonard residential tower nearing completion in New York and their Ziggurat-shaped extension to Tate Modern opening in London.

They also had a pyramid-shaped skyscraper approved in Paris, the first tall building in the city for 40 years.

However Herzog & de Meuron was particularly in the news over the past 12 months for football-related projects – possibly thanks to soccer-loving Jacques Herzog. It unveiled designs for a new stadium for Chelsea Football Club while the stadium it  completed in Bordeaux last year was used as a venue for the Euro 2016 tournament earlier this summer.

With so much global attention on soccer stadiums, our May 2015 roundup of other stadiums designed by the architects was one of our most popular stories about them over the period, helping to propel them into our top three.
