Pop singer Beyoncé is not the first name you'd associate with architecture and design, but she has still managed to score a spot in our chart.
In 2015 an Australian firm cited her body as inspiration for a curvaceous tower to be built in Melbourne, catapulting the Texan-born entertainer onto our Hot List.
The 226-metre-high Premiere Tower by Elenberg Fraser gained approval in May 2015 for the site at 134 Spencer Street. Its undulating form is apparently based on the fabric-wrapped bodies of dancers in the singer's music video for Ghost – a song from her self-titled 2013 album.
The story was wildly popular, and its inclusion in our weekly news roundup and Dezeen Mail newsletter announcement helped propel the former Destiny's Child member up our ranking.
Dezeen commenters were divided over the design – some applauded the architects' reference to popular culture, while others called the justification a "slap in the face" – and the debate earned the article a place in that week's comments update.
