Corten steel

Corten steel is the only trademarked material to make it into the top 100 of our Hot List. A perennial favourite thanks to its rusty patina, Corten is a form of weathering steel.

These alloy metals are pre-treated to develop a rust-like coating that removes the need for other finishes like paint.

Examples of its use that have proved popular this year include an extension to an 18th-century Belgian farmhouse and a Holocaust memorial in Bologna.

However our tag about the material was the most popular page of all over the year, suggesting that lots of architects are browsing posts about Corten to get ideas for their own projects.
