Carole Baijings
Carole Baijings is co-founder of Amsterdam-based design studio Scholten & Baijings.
Dutch designers Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings founded Scholten & Baijings in 2000. There has been a natural division of labour since, with Carole focusing on design detail and production, and Stefan on ideology. The couple’s family and home have become the testing grounds for their designs, with the philosophy that they can’t expect people to buy a product if they wouldn’t want it themselves. For the duo, a successful design is one that people will cherish for a long time.
Scholten and Baijings find inspiration in art and design history, whilst always looking to invent new ways of living and working. The studio designs tableware and textiles alongside their furniture and lighting collections, producing objects in textiles, glass and ceramics. They have produced museum exhibitions, showcase home designs, installations, and even a concept car for MINI.
Scholten & Baijings’ clients include Hay, The Art Institute of Chicago, V&A Museum, Rijksmuseum, 1616 Arita Japan, Herman Miller, Georg Jensen, MINI, Maharam, Thomas Eyck, and Karimoku New Standard.
The studio’s work has been awarded four Dutch Design Awards and three ELLE Decoration International Design Awards. In 2015, Phaidon published the studio’s first monograph, Reproducing Scholten & Baijings.
