The Shangwei Village Plugin Houses project renovates houses that were left vacant and in ruins for decades after the village suffered from heavy disinvestment.
This project was in response to half of the homes in Shangwei Village, Shenzhen, China, being vacant and difficult to renovate because any work would affect adjacent structures. To circumvent this problem, the Plugin House leaves the original structure untouched while a new structure is built inside the existing house. The Plugin House uses a modular building system of prefabricated panels, making it possible to affordably upgrade dilapidated properties to modern living.
