The village lounge in Shangcun, China, is a renovation project that transformed a ruined courtyard into a public space.
The project provides a leisure and multi-used space for the villagers of Shangcun. The structure was built by collecting old black bricks, black tiles, stones and wood from the construction site to form landscape elements based on the original layout of the courtyard. The design is based on the principle of minimal intervention and uses the local material of bamboo. Six large sheltered units were created to provide a space for joint activities between visitors and the villagers.
