Shortlisted for civic and cultural interior of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, Kath is a gothic-inspired cafe in one if the former chapels of Antwerp’s medieval cathedral, designed by Belgian studio Van Staeyen Intérieur Architecten.
The cafe, which also serves as a bar and meeting space for worshippers and visitors, was designed based on motifs, colours and structural elements from the cathedral itself.
A square, wooden structure that serves as both the bar and cafe preparation and serving space is the main addition to the space.
Three serving windows are cut out of the sides in three different shapes that match the shapes of existing windows in the cathedral. The entrance is a pointed arch.
