Shortlisted for leisure and wellness interior of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, The Solar Egg by Bigert & Bergström seeks to symbolise rebirth and new opportunities at the start of Kiruna’s urban transformation.

The a project involves the relocation of entire city districts in response to ground subsidence caused by decades of iron ore mining.

Solar Egg is a fully functional public sauna and an art piece at the same time. The egg extends the idea of a city on the move. Easily mounted and dismantled, it demands no building permit. It’s free and open to all. An interactive piece of architecture, the Solar Egg reflects the surroundings while hosting the thoughts and feelings of the citizens.
