Winner: Restaurant and bar interior of the year 2019. Bar Lotus, a cocktail bar designed by Office AIO, features emerald green walls and rippling rose gold ceilings and is situated in the sycamore tree-lined neighbourhood of Jing’an, Shanghai.

The site was previously used as a back of house kitchen, which consisted of two staggered rectangular volumes and had no openings on the street-facing facade before being transformed into a cocktail bar, which can also be used as a cafe during the day.

The designers created an entrance on this street-facing facade that leads to a long corridor. This long arched hallway divides the interior spaces into two main parts acting as a connecting space for the two rooms.

White perforated steel panels line the interior of the central hallway and sliding mirrored walls cover the arched entrances to the cocktail bar.

Judges comments: "The design is very singular with a good mix of traditional and contemporary references," the judges said. "The bar is spatially interesting through its simplicity and the choice of materials whilst the arches offer different glimpses into the space, which enhances the character of the interior."
