Designed by DROM, Azatlyk Square is a renovated public square in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.
The city of Naberezhnye Chelny was a Soviet monotown built in the seventies around the famous Kamaz truck factory.
The updated public space is a fresh take on the role of public space in the single-industry city.
The square has been transformed from an underused relic of the Soviet past to a dynamic and vibrant multi-use public space.
This project has been longlisted in the landscape project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
