OJT has designed a housing complex for war veterans and their families in New Orleans, with dwellings arranged to foster social bonding and prevent isolation.
The complex is a 58-unit mixed-use development in an area with a robust history of community-generated change. Bastion is framed by ideas about collective neighborhood development and supportive living environments.
Using the Generations of Hope Community Model – previously applied to put foster children and older caregivers in mutually beneficial living situations – Bastion adapts the potential of intergenerational communities to fill a gap in public and privately-developed veteran housing programs.
The project fosters a protected but inclusive, thriving live/work environment that veterans and their families, retired military, and community members can establish while taking advantage of the resources of the city at large.
This project has been longlisted in the housing project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
