Kosuke Bando Architects has renovated a 100-year-old traditional Japanese farmhouse in the Tokushima's Kito District.
The site, surrounded by magnificent mountains, is located in a village rich in nature, with rows of kito-yuzu [citron tree] fields.
The studio wanted to reproduce the atmosphere created by the roof of the main house, which used to be large and distinct in the village, and would restore the dignity of the house, so the practice decided to build a new hip roof.
The architects designed the large roof as a landmark and created a new landscape for the village.
This project has been longlisted in the residential rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
