Trace Architecture Office has designed Huandao Middle School in Haikou, China with monolithic white ramps to encourage interaction and play between students.
The school is designed to accommodate teaching classrooms, function classrooms, student dormitories and a dining hall for more than 1,200 students.
The design initiated from thinking about how to create a nurturing environment that celebrates creativity and interaction, rather than examination-oriented learning cultures.
A series of diversified and integrated spaces are thus created to promote active and spontaneous learning. At the same time, the design actively responses to the various demands of the tropical climate and specific site conditions.
This project has been longlisted in the civic building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
