Shigenori Uoya Architects and Muura have created a workspace composed of three traditional Kyoto-style townhouses and 19 shabby shipping containers.
The building has been completed by inserting a steel frame into the site stride across the group of Nagaya [Kyoto townhouses] in the historic block and installing used shipping containers.
This project focuses on how to preserve and utilise the historical alleys and group of Nagaya that were left behind in the current block structure of the old town in Kyoto, not as individual buildings but as urban heritage.
This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
