Royal Wharf Pier is a new riverboat terminal on the Thames, located near London City Airport and the Thames Barrier.
The pier harnesses infrastructure to create valuable public realm, addressing the practical requirements of Thames commuter traffic and creating memorable public spaces for all.
A wide public promenade, reminiscent of British seaside piers, leads to a platform offering unique views up and down the river.
Beyond, a gangway leads to the floating pontoon. Here, a folded butterfly roof floats over a frameless glass facade to reveal wide views along the river. Wood seating offers warmth and protection from the elements.
This project has been longlisted in the infrastructure project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
