Newtab-22 has created a sustainable material similar to concrete from the waste material of the seafood and shellfish industry.
Sea Stone is a cement look-alike "mimic" material which in reality is comprised by 100% natural, non-toxic and sustainable materials. It features significant hardness, yet its light weight is remarkable.
Every year, 7 million tonnes of seashells are discarded by the seafood industry and aquaculture in the world. Sea Stone finds the beneficial use of discarded shells, consisting of seashells which have high calcium carbonate concentration which can be considered as limestone and seen as a valuable biomaterial.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
