Rohan Collett Architects has transformed a social housing development in New Zealand, creating modern light-filled units.
The project saw the redevelopment of a low-density site into a medium density project, focused on architecture and urban design that encourages social integration, self-reliance, and reduces the stigma often associated with low-cost housing.
The design was based around a mobility scooter and pedestrian central lane, linking courtyards and a common green areas with the two street entrances with accessibility being a key driver.
The nine existing old family units were replaced with twenty eight warm modern light-filled units aimed at the largest demographic in need: those aged over-55 mostly single tenants.
This project has been longlisted in the housing project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
