Rurban Studio has designed Swan Science Museum north of Rongcheng Swan Lake in Weihai, Shandong.
The museum aims to help people learn about the behaviour of swans, their habitats and how to protect their natural environment in an interesting and easy-to-understand way through abundant photographs, physical models and VR Cinema.
To minimise intervention and protect the natural environment of the site, the main volume of the museum building is floating with the support of the clustered columns at the bottom.
The space is created by the series of umbrella-shaped structure units on a hexagonal grid, which is inspired by the swan’s webbed foot.
This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
