Stephenson Studio has extended a deconsecrated church with a triple-height entrance atrium that allows views up towards the existing campanile tower.
The Oglesby Centre is a contemporary extension to the Grade II-listed St Peter's Church, set amidst the rich industrial heritage of the Ancoats district in Manchester.
The form of the three-storey extension is cut and carved out of the solid, expressed as a Roman-format handmade brick plinth at street level that cradles an acoustically isolated first-floor rehearsal space, itself manifesting as a heavily articulated weathering steel box.
The building features artisanal and bespoke detailing throughout.
This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
