Shortlisted for seating design of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020, CoronaCrisisKruk has been designed in response to social distancing measures during the coronavirus pandemic.
When the coronavirus hit, the Dutch government responded by setting new guidelines for its people: refrain from touching others and remain distant.
A new and unknown behaviour had to be learnt, which felt uncomfortable and uncertain. People moved further apart than necessary, and even looked away from one another when passing.
The CoronaCrisisKruk is a response to this behaviour. It invites people to move towards the 1.5-metre limit, sit down and start conversation. It makes people forget about the guidelines and creates room for contact and attention, which people long for so much right now.
