Shortlisted for cultural building of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020, He Art Museum is a non-profit art institution located in Guangdong, China.
"He" in Chinese carries multiple meanings: harmony, balance, fortune and union. Ando has drawn from these connotations and integrated the rich cultural meaning from the southern Chinese region into the architecture.
The museum presents Ando's signature with the use of slick concrete – used in the double-helix staircases in the central courtyard – delivering the rich layers of space and dynamics.
The central sky-well floods the museum with natural light, creating spaciousness, clarity and a symbol of hope.
