Shortlisted for bar interior of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020, a former lumberyard in Albuquerque has been reimagined into an artisanal food hall, cafe and wine bar.

The Mercantile is the heartbeat of Sawmill Market, an artisanal food hall in Albuquerque. Inspired by a uniquely New Mexican ethos of open-armed hospitality, as well as the kitchens, pantries and living rooms that it's borne from.

Islyn Studio embraced and reimagined a former lumberyard in designing The Mercantile, using clean, organic forms, natural and hand-forged materials and a local palette of soft colours.

The result is a communal gathering place that's at once casual and sublime – a cafe, wine bar and pantry that fosters unexpected human experience and spurs a cultural shift in Albuquerque's culinary imagination.
