Shortlisted in the small interior of the year of Dezeen Awards 2020, Studio Wills + Architects has renovated a 30-year old flat in a public housing block in Singapore.

The studio was tasked with housing two programmes – home and office – within a limited footprint, as well as creating a framework to enable its future-proofing.

The result is a new flat that allows easy adaptation for a variety of uses, improving the functionality of the formerly single-use residential unit.

While small in scale, the project is an example of repurposing of a HDB flat, in which more than 80 percent of Singapore's population resides, sustaining it over the course of the building's life.
