The new Tambacounda Maternity and Paediatric Hospital, funded by the Albers Foundation, serves a population of almost 1 million inhabitants for eastern Senegal.
The hospital is equipped with two operation rooms, intensive care units and provides more than 150 beds.
With its curvilinear layout, the building employs passive cooling techniques to respond to the harsh climate of Tambacounda. The perforated brick wall enables cross ventilation and a double vaulted roof insulates the upper floor, allowing the building to operate without air-conditioning. The hospital was built by local builders using regional resources, benefiting the local community economically.
This project has been longlisted in the civic building category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
