Studio ThusThat uses byproducts of copper mining and recycling to create a series of furniture objects.
In a truly interdisciplinary manner, the designers worked closely with researchers and a metal recycling plant to explore the unique properties of the byproduct, slag, when used as a “geopolymer”, an alternative to cement with a substantially lower CO2e footprint. The result is a variety of objects, each exploring a unique property of this novel material. The pieces invite us to imagine how byproducts could be used in other sectors, like construction, to offset growing demands.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
