Atelier Mearc has created a lakeside stay set into a terrace field for travellers to southern China.
The project is a 16-room hotel set in a village on the shores of Dongjiang Lake in Chenzhou, Hunan Province.
The frame of the building encompasses both public and private spaces, on an X and Y-axis running from east to west and south to north. The original frame of Begonia Inn is next to a terrace field facing the lake, since the house owner made use of half the terrace to build the 'house'.
On the X-axis, the public area of the hotel is visible to villagers, while on the Y-axis the rooms are hidden from view. Key spaces include a rooftop lounge, outdoor dining area, and terraced area overlooking the lake.
This project has been longlisted in the hospitality building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
