Comley Bank is located in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
This project was originally a bakery built in the last decade of the 1800s on the ground floor of a classic Victorian Edinburgh tenement, where structural alterations started in 2014 to convert the property into a residential dwelling. Work stopped soon after with initial structural works partially complete.
Excited by a blank canvas, Cabins in the City purchased the property in 2020 to create a dwelling informed by its origins and original features.
"We listened to what it wanted to be. Organic, open, warm, a sanctuary within the city that retained a connection to its commercial past with the exposed wall informing colour and material choice," said the architects.
The overall aim was to create a property of architectural and design significance with longstanding relevance. Cabins in the City wanted to demonstrate what could be achieved differently with a commercial unit within a traditional Edinburgh tenement.
This project has been longlisted in the residential rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
