Atelier Opa has created an inexpensive cardboard bedroom to provide temporary shelter for earthquake victims in Japan.
Cardboard Sleep Capsule is a compact, lightweight, prefabricated, inexpensive cardboard bedroom designed to be set in a gymnasium or civic hall for victims of earthquakes or disasters.
Connected with two returnable boxes for shipping and designed to be assembled in a few minutes (the floor and walls are fixed with slide locks, so no tape or nails are needed), the single room has holes as an entrance and a window for daylight and ventilation. The two square metres of the single sleep capsule, combined with the storage, desk, and chair space, match the minimum square metres of living space per person recommended by the Sphere Standards of Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response.
This project has been longlisted in the product design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
