FADAA has designed D/O Aqaba in Jordan.
This project was designed by working alongside D/O's craftspeople, a materiality-driven approach created the concept of a flexible retail store that embraces craft and low carbon materials.
By reimagining the role of a "Mashrabiyya" (a bio-based low carbon concrete), it's able to protect guests from the harsh sun and extends spatially into the boutique.
Locking the sequestered carbon of the shells of oysters, mussels, and clams from the waste of seafood restaurants in Aqaba, the shells were crushed and used as aggregate to create the low carbon concrete.
Lime-plastered walls, floors and ceilings, as well as native plant species contribute to creating a healthy indoor environment within the space of D/O Aqaba.
This project has been longlisted in the sustainable interior category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
